What a good idea, Janice, to create a Scotiana philatelic album and to open its pages to our readers !
I have only a few stamps and First Day Covers to begin with but see how beautiful they are ! You know, I’m not a philatelic expert and I’ve bought them only for the sake of their beauty. Look how they perfectly embody the spirit of Scotland, its colours, its landscapes, the typically Scottish atmosphere…
It certainly could be very exciting to embark on such a philatelic adventure. We would learn a lot of things in the process and maybe a great stamp collector would come one day to Scotiana to add his own comments and share his expertise with us. You know what ! I feel like going at once in the attic to try and find some dusty box I know is lying there and which is full of old stamps. Maybe I could find in it one or two relating to Scotland.
Scotland doesn’t issue its own stamps and, indeed, when posting a letter from there, the only alternative is to put on the envelope a British stamp with Queen Elisabeth’s head on it. Didn’t you say to me the Queen was a great stamp collector herself, or was it her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, I can’t remember ?
Anyway there must be many British stamps or FDCs illustrating Scottish themes. So wide is the choice. Be it to commemorate historical facts, the Scottish kings and queens or the famous heroes, scientific discoveries, artistic talent, or to celebrate writers, sports champions, the variety of fauna and flora, the innumerable castles, monuments and bridges…
A philatelic journey to Scotland ? OH OUI !!! what a trip !!! …
