Scottish Diaspora Tapestry Project

Hi Mairiuna!

Happy to welcome you back home and I just can’t wait to read your next article about the Prestonpans Tapestry which you had the opportunity to visit while in the city of Bayeux.

It must have been so impressive to view the 104 meters wide embroidered panels celebrating the journey of 25 year old Bonnie Prince Charlie from France then through the Scottish Highlands to Victory at Prestonpans in 1745.

In the meantime, I’ll share with you a similar story, that of the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry which brought together volunteers from 25 countries of the world to create, over the past two years, the tapestry with depicts the adventures and experiences of Scottish immigrants over the centuries.

It all started in 2012, when each country submitted stories of their Scottish connections for a project to have local volunteer stitchers embroid up to 10 tapestry panels per nation. Along side, homeland panels has also been created by Scottish-based immigrants communities.

In early 2014, the panels will arrive in Scotland, ready to be assembled and finished for presentation and for the celebrations to begin.

In 2015, the full Tapestry will first and foremost be available for international exhibitions in the Diaspora communities which it covers, to be hosted by representatives of those communities.

Thereafter the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry will be exhibited at venues far and wide!

Wow, what a great educational and cultural project! I have marked my agenda for the Homecoming Scotland 2014 celebrations as I would be so delighted to be part of it.

Until then, enjoy!
