Enjoy Scotland Featured Films

Hi Mairiuna,

Having written down as part of my New Year’s resolutions to dedicate time each month for viewing Scotland related films, I’d like to share with you some of the titles on my list.

Top and foremost, I’ll watch again  BRAVE  by Disney – Pixar as it’s visual magic and stunning storytelling simply carries me away!

The subjects of the Scottish clan culture and female emancipation in the medieval Highlands of Scotland might be controversial and even though some passages are very dark, we do laugh a lot and by all means, Scotland’s landscapes are beautiful.

Brave’s plot :
‘Princess Merida rebels against her mother’s wish to marry her off to the winner of a tournament between the first born sons of the three leading clans, and her excursion into the supernatural in order to find a way out of her situation has unforeseen consequences, especially for her mother, Queen Elinor. Dangers are faced by both of them as they seek to reverse what Merida has done, and the film builds to a satisfyingly climactic conclusion.’

Meanwhile the strong female lead characters are especially welcome and the portrayal of the landscape of Scotland is nothing short of magnificent, and benefits greatly from the truly outstanding animation which adds so much to the experience of watching the film.

It is no surprise that Scotland’s national tourist board, VisitScotland, have invested a significant amount in a promotional advert which accompanies the film.

FURTHER VIEWINGS

The Cheviot, the Stag and the Big Black Oil

‘A play that was eventually serialized for the BBC, it tells the story of the transformation of the Scottish highlands, from the end of the Jacobite rebellion to the beginnings of its 20th century oil boom. Calculations around Scotland oil, of course, figure heavily in Scottish nationalist arguments for independence.’

Local Hero

‘An American oil man journeys to Scotland in this 1983 film. “The land breathes with an ancient mystery,” intones the trailer’s narrator. “And all who witnesses its wonders come to believe in its magic.’

The Sunshine on Leith

A feel-good story about two British soldiers returning home from Afghanistan to their families in Edinburgh and pursuing civilian life and love. It’s based on a musical by the popular Scottish band the Proclaimers, who, you guessed it, also happen to very much be in the “Yes” camp.

And more..

CullodenBrigadoon | Finding Neverland |

Any other suggestions?

Would love to hear about them 🙂

Until next, all the very best.
